In February of 2021 I moved to the small town “Salla” located in Finnish lapland near the border of Russia to escape the city lights. Located slightly above the arctic circle with minimal light pollution it was an excellent place to observe the northern lights. This is where I would stay until late December and then my adventures took me a little further north to Sodankylä.

The aurora season of 2021 - 2022 was mostly done in those two locations and you could say it was the first one for me.

Auroras over Saana

One of the last high-lights of this season was when I booked a trip to Kilpisjärvi with an old friend of mine from the school days who I just happened to meet on a Facebook group “revontulikyttääjät” meant for Finnish aurora chasers. Three months later I moved to this small village and is where I would spend the entire next season.
